Design at LloydsDirect

In the design team, we don’t just make things beautiful. We communicate ideas clearly, create seamless experiences, and shape technology that powers the fastest-growing pharmacy in the UK.

Our design principles

Where possible, research and data inform our thinking. But when ambiguity reigns – and let’s be honest, that’s often the case in design – we turn to our design principles for guidance.

🧠 Learn, don't assume

Ground your designs in research about the people who use LloydsDirect, and what they need and expect from us. Think about those with different levels of ability from the start, ensuring your designs are accessible for everyone.

💊 Reduce complexity

Challenge the complex world of pharmacy and innovate to make it simpler. Design for how people want to manage their medicine, not for how they currently do. Speak to them in their language, not medical jargon.

🖐 Be a guiding hand

Medicine is a sensitive subject that can bring people worry. Our designs should reassure them with a guiding hand. Empower people with choices and give them the information they need, without overwhelming them with detail.

👨‍👨‍👦 Create as a collective

Harness the team’s collective expertise so that everything we create is the best it can be. Seek feedback early and often, stay open to new ways of solving problems, and show each other respect at all times.

What we do

Small but effective, our team is made up of experts on brand, product, content and research.

Brand design

Our brand designers bring LloydsDirect to life. Last year we worked with illustrator Laura Alejo and photographer Aleksandra Kingo to define parts of our visual identity. The brand team work closely with the marketing department and are responsible for a wide range of projects from TV advertising to online campaigns.

📱 Product design

Our patients mostly interact with LloydsDirect through our iOS, Android and web apps – and it's our product designers who lead the creation of these experiences. They also work on the many internal tools that keep our pharmacy running smoothly, helping us dispense and post thousands of packs of medicine every day.

✍️ Content design

Content touches all areas of design – from defining our product terminology to shaping our brand voice. And it's not just about writing: our content designers create and implement standards for what we say, and how we say it, throughout the entire patient experience.

👀 User research

Our user researchers bring our patients’ voices to the forefront. Whether through usability testing or ethnographic methods, they deliver invaluable insight from our patients, GPs, LloydsPharmacy staff, and our own people. It’s this knowledge that guides our product improvements, helping us give our patients the best possible experience.

How we work

Rituals and meetings

We have a weekly sync-up, two design critiques a week and a fortnightly retro.

Remote working and our Shoreditch office

We work remotely most of the time. But we recently started trialling one day a week in our Shoreditch office. It's completely optional, but we're enjoying hanging out more in person – as are our office dogs!

Design software

We use Figma (obviously), Whimsical, Notion and Adobe CC. All the classics.

Our interview process

What to expect when you apply 👉

Stage 1

Call with our internal recruiter – 30 minutes

Once we’ve reviewed your portfolio, we’ll get in touch to arrange a chat with one of our internal recruiters. They’ll find out a bit more about you, and tell you a little about LloydsDirect.

Stage 2

Chat with hiring manager – 45 mins – video call

If all goes well, we’ll schedule a call with the hiring manager. In this interview, we’ll chat about design at LloydsDirect and your passions as a designer.

Stage 3

Values interview and case study review - 90 mins - video call

You’ll be happy to hear we don’t set interview tasks here. Instead, we’ll ask you to choose one or two case studies to talk through with the wider team, such as Product Managers and User Researchers.

This is also a good opportunity to ask questions and learn more about our teams. Our values are important to us, so after this there will be questions around our three values: positive, thoughtful and inventive.

Notes & details
  • We're using the quote block to create the fixed navbar instead of an ID, so it should work out of the box, but that means you can't really use the Notion quote block anywhere else throughout this template. Thinking of better ways to go about this!
  • The navbar & footer are global Notion blocks, meaning if you edit the ones on the template home page, it'll carry the changes over to the rest of the site
